The silence in the room stretched longer than it should have, the air thick and heavy. Richard could feel the weight of Susan’s gaze pressing against him, and for a brief, dangerous second, he forgot where he was.

The gentle rhythm of her breathing, the soft curve of her lips as she looked at him, it all tugged at something deep inside him that he didn’t recognize.

Then, like a man waking from a daze, he blinked hard and pulled himself together. His voice came out lower than usual, careful and restrained.

“Susan,” he said quickly, rising from his seat, “when you’re ready to give your life to Christ, let me know. That’s where everything begins.”

Susan’s voice trembled slightly. “I… I think I’m ready,” she said. “After everything you’ve said today, I don’t want to keep living like before. I want to start again.”

Richard’s heart softened, and he nodded. “Alright,” he said quietly, moving closer but maintaining a careful distance. He led her in a short prayer of salvation, his tone gentle, guiding her through each word until her voice broke softly at the end.

When they finished, she looked lighter, tears glistening in her eyes. Richard smiled faintly, but he couldn’t hold her gaze for long. “You’ve made the right choice, Susan. I’ll come by another time for prayers and more counseling about your dreams. You’ll be fine.”

He stood up almost immediately, his composure tight. “I have to go now,” he added quickly, reaching for his Bible and water bottle.

Susan nodded, smiling shyly. “Thank you, Richard… really.”

He gave a short nod and stepped outside. The moment the door closed behind him, he exhaled sharply, leaning against the car for balance. His chest rose and fell, a storm of emotions raging quietly inside him.

He had never felt this way before, not for anyone. It wasn’t like him. He had seen beautiful women, counseled many, prayed for many, but never once had he seen them as anything more than souls to be helped.

So why now? Why her?

He rubbed his palms against the steering wheel, trying to steady himself. “Lord,” he whispered under his breath, “what’s happening to me?”

He sat there for a while, then finally started the car and drove off, his thoughts spinning faster than the wheels beneath him.
