Susan sat by her window that night, staring at the city lights flickering in the distance. The laughter and noise from nearby bars filled the air, but she felt none of it.
Her mind was trapped in the memory of what she had done, Richard’s shocked eyes, his silence, the look of disappointment that cut deeper than anger ever could.
She didn’t mean for things to go that far. Her plan was only to scare him off, to make him leave her alone so she could go back to living without feeling watched by his kindness. But now, she couldn’t stop thinking about him.
He didn’t yell, he didn’t curse her, he simply stood there, speechless and calm, like someone too good for the kind of games she played.
Word had already reached her that the church was talking. Some said Richard had fallen for her, others whispered that he was hiding something.
The guilt burned through her chest. She had caused this. A man who had shown her nothing but compassion was now being judged because of her foolishness.
Finally, she picked up her phone and typed slowly, “I’m sorry for what happened. I didn’t mean to cause you trouble. Please forgive me.” She stared at the message for a long moment before pressing send.
Richard was in his office when the message came through. He glanced at the screen, surprised to see her name again. For a few seconds, he didn’t know what to feel. Relief? Caution? Something inside him warmed at the sight of her message, but another part of him was uneasy.
He placed his phone down and leaned back in his chair, whispering to himself, “Why am I happy she reached out?” He knew his intentions were pure, yet his heart felt strangely light, as if her apology had touched something deeper than he expected.
Still, he said a quiet prayer before replying, asking God to guide his response. He didn’t want emotion to cloud his mission, to win her soul, not her affection.
