Susan sat on the edge of her bed, her phone resting in her hand. It had been days since she sent that apology, yet there was still no reply from Richard. She refreshed her messages for the tenth time that night, hoping to see a reply or anything. But nothing came.
“Maybe he’s angry,” she muttered to herself. “Or maybe he finally got the message to leave me alone.”
Still, the silence bothered her more than she expected. Richard wasn’t the kind of man to hold grudges. He was patient, gentle, forgiving, the kind of person she had never met before. The thought that she might have hurt him for real made her chest tighten.
She blamed herself for everything. The kiss, the mockery, the rumors. She wanted to believe she was only feeling guilty, that this ache inside was nothing but remorse. But as the days passed, she realized it wasn’t just guilt, it was something far more dangerous. Something she didn’t want to name.
Her heart began to betray her. Every time she saw a man in a suit or heard someone mention church, her mind drifted back to him, his calm eyes, the warmth in his voice, the way he spoke about God as if He was someone close. It frightened her. Love, she thought, was not for someone like her.
In an attempt to silence her feelings, Susan threw herself back into her old life. She dressed up, went to the clubs, and met her regular clients. But something had changed. The music sounded too loud, the laughter too fake, and the smell of alcohol made her sick.
When one of her clients tried to touch her, she pushed him away sharply. “Don’t,” she said, her voice trembling. “Just don’t.” The man frowned, confused. “You used to enjoy this, babe. What’s wrong with you?”
Susan didn’t answer. She grabbed her purse and walked out into the night air, her heart pounding. Everything that used to thrill her now felt empty. And no matter how hard she tried to shake it off, one face refused to leave her thoughts...Richard’s.
She leaned against a wall outside the club, staring at the night sky. “What are you doing to me, Richard?” she whispered to herself, half-angry, half-broken. But deep down, she knew the answer.
