The days that followed Susan’s apology were uneasy for Richard. He tried to stay focused on his ministry, his sermons, and his responsibilities, yet her name lingered in his thoughts more often than he liked to admit.
Every time his phone buzzed, he found himself hoping it was another message from her, though he quickly rebuked the thought each time it crossed his mind. He had always seen Susan as a soul to be saved, but something was changing.
Somewhere between the prayers, the concern, and her unexpected message of remorse, his heart began to soften in a way that frightened him.
Late one evening, Richard sat alone in the church auditorium, the lights dim, his Bible open but unread. “Lord,” he whispered, his voice trembling, “I only wanted to win her soul for You, but now I can’t deny that she’s on my mind. I don’t understand this feeling.”
He closed his eyes and let out a heavy sigh. His heart battled between human emotion and divine calling. He reminded himself that Susan’s journey wasn’t about him, it was about God’s mercy reaching her. Still, the sound of her name in his thoughts came with warmth he couldn’t shake off.
Charles noticed the change quickly. When they met at the office, he smirked and said, “You’ve been too quiet lately, Pastor Tech. Don’t tell me is because of that street girl rumor going around in the church".
Richard gave a small, tight smile, choosing silence over argument. But later, alone in his car, the kiss scene with Susan replayed in his mind.
He shook his head, gripping the steering wheel. “No,” he said to himself. “This is not love. It’s compassion. It has to be.” But deep down, even he wasn’t sure anymore.
That night, he made a firm decision, he would fast again and pray for clarity. He needed to silence his emotions before they led him away from his purpose. Yet as he knelt in prayer, the only face that came to mind was Susan’s.
