CHAPTER EIGHT
The Boy With Too Many Secrets
Westview High was busy during the morning assembly.
Students stood in rows, talking quietly while teachers moved around checking uniforms and attendance.
Aurora stood with her classmates, holding her bag tightly in front of her. She kept her head slightly lowered — not because she was afraid, but because she preferred not to attract attention.
But today, her mind was somewhere else.
She kept thinking about Leonard.
About the way he had looked at the sky yesterday evening.
About the small bird he had drawn in her sketchbook.
About how quiet he had been when he talked about her wanting freedom.
She didn’t realize she was smiling slightly.
Until she heard whispers.
“Leonard is back.”
Aurora looked up slightly.
At the entrance of the assembly hall, Leonard walked in with The Iron Wolves behind him.
But something felt different today.
Leonard wasn’t walking like usual.
His expression was colder.
More distant.
Students automatically stepped aside as he passed. Not because he forced them — but because his reputation did it for him.
Aurora noticed something else.
There was a new scar near his eyebrow. Small. Fresh.
She felt a strange tightening in her chest.
After assembly ended, Aurora found Leonard near the school courtyard.
He was alone.
Which was unusual.
“Leonard?” she called softly.
He turned.
“Hey,” he said.
But his voice was tired.
Aurora walked closer.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
Leonard didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he asked, “Did you notice?”
“The scar?” Aurora said softly.
He nodded.
Leonard looked away for a moment.
Then he said quietly:
“Car accident.”
Aurora’s eyes widened slightly.
“When I was younger,” he continued, voice low, “my father was always busy with business. I was angry a lot. I started driving fast. Too fast.”
He paused.
“I crashed once.”
Aurora stayed silent, listening.
“My friend was in the car with me,” Leonard said quietly. “He survived. But I realized something that day.”
“What?” Aurora asked softly.
“That speed doesn’t make you free,” he said. “It just makes you feel like you are.”
Aurora felt her chest tighten slightly.
Leonard was not just dangerous because he liked thrill.
He was dangerous because he had scars he didn’t talk about.
Silence filled the space between them.
Then Leonard spoke again.
“People think I like danger,” he said.
“Do you?” Aurora asked softly.
Leonard looked at her.
For a long moment, he didn’t answer.
Then he said quietly:
“No.”
“That’s new,” Aurora said softly.
Leonard smirked slightly.
“You make me want different things,” he said quietly.
Aurora’s heart started beating faster.
She didn’t know how to respond.
So she just stood there beside him.
In the quiet morning air.
Feeling like their lives were slowly - dangerously - getting closer.
