CHAPTER SEVEN

 Words That Were Not Said

Westview High was quieter in the evenings.

After school ended, most students went home. The hallways became calmer, lights softer, footsteps echoing faintly across empty corridors.

Aurora liked this time of day.

She sat on the same bench near the school garden, sketchbook open on her lap. The evening light was soft and warm, touching the pages of her drawing gently.

But today, she was not fully focused on her drawing.

She kept thinking about Leonard.

About how he protected her.

About how he walked beside her silently.

About how he never forced her to speak when she was nervous.

Aurora was not used to being protected.

She was used to being invisible.

So why did her heart feel warmer instead of scared?

Footsteps approached.

Slow. Calm. Familiar.

Aurora didn’t look up immediately.

She already knew who it was.

Leonard sat beside her on the bench — not too close, not too far.

“You always stay after school,” he said.

“Yes,” Aurora replied softly. “It’s peaceful here.”

Leonard nodded.

Silence settled between them.

Not awkward silence.

Comfortable silence.

Leonard leaned back slightly, looking at the sky turning orange and purple.

“You shouldn’t let people treat you like that,” he said suddenly.

Aurora paused.

“I don’t like fighting,” she said quietly.

“That’s different from letting people hurt you,” Leonard replied.

Aurora didn’t answer immediately.

After a moment, she spoke softly.

“Why do you keep protecting me?”

Leonard didn’t answer immediately.

That was unusual for him.

He was usually confident. Direct.

But tonight, he was quiet.

“You’re different,” he said finally.

“How?” she asked.

“You don’t want my money.

You don’t care about my reputation.

You just want peace.”

Aurora felt her heartbeat quicken slightly.

“That’s rare,” Leonard continued quietly.

Aurora turned slightly to look at him.

Up close, he looked less intimidating. Less dangerous. Just a boy with tired eyes and messy dark hair moving slightly in the evening wind.

“You’re not scary to me,” she said softly.

Leonard looked surprised.

“You’re dangerous,” she added quickly.

He smirked faintly.

“Good,” he said. “I was starting to think I lost that reputation.”

More silence.

But this time, it felt heavier.

More emotional.

Leonard suddenly reached slowly toward her.

Aurora’s breath caught slightly — but he only took her pencil gently from her hand.

Then he added a small detail to her drawing.

A small bird flying across the sky.

“You draw like you want freedom,” he said quietly.

“I do,” Aurora admitted.

Leonard didn’t return the pencil immediately.

And for a moment, neither of them moved.

Because something was changing.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Dangerously.

Not with loud confessions.

But with silence that meant more than words ever could.
