                             CHAPTER Six

   The Quiet Space Between Them

Westview High was slowly becoming quieter as the school day ended.

Students packed their bags, chatting loudly as they left. The noise of the day was fading into soft evening air.

Aurora stood near her locker, carefully placing her books inside her bag. Her sketchbook was still slightly torn from earlier, and she kept touching it gently like she was making sure it was still safe.

She was thinking about everything that had happened today.

About Mira.

About the food.

About the sketchbook.

About Leonard standing in front of her without raising his voice.

She didn’t understand why her chest felt warm instead of scared.

Footsteps approached.

Slow. Calm. Confident.

Aurora didn’t need to look up to know who it was.

“Going home?” Leonard asked.

“Yes,” Aurora said softly.

He stood beside her, hands in his pockets.

“You walk alone?” he asked.

“Yes… I usually do.”

Leonard frowned slightly, but didn’t say anything immediately.

Instead, he said, “That’s not smart in this part of town.”

Aurora blinked.

“I’ll be fine,” she said.

Leonard didn’t argue.

But he also didn’t leave.

He just stood there quietly like he was deciding something.

Finally, he spoke.

“Let me walk you to the bus stop.”

Aurora hesitated.

Not because she was scared of him.

But because she wasn’t used to people offering protection without asking for something in return.

“Okay,” she said softly.

They walked together through the school gate.

Students were still whispering when they saw them.

“Leonard and that quiet girl again.”

“They look strange together.”

But Leonard didn’t care.

Aurora walked slightly behind him at first, then slowly matched his pace.

The evening wind moved softly through the street.

After a few minutes, they reached the bus stop.

Aurora turned slightly.

“Thank you,” she said.

Leonard nodded.

Then he did something unexpected.

“If Mira or anyone else bothers you again,” he said quietly, “tell me.”

Aurora looked up at him.

“Why do you keep protecting me?” she asked softly.

Leonard didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at the road for a moment before saying:

“Because you don’t ask for attention.”

Aurora felt something inside her chest tighten slightly.

“That’s rare,” he added.

The bus arrived.

Aurora stepped forward, then paused.

“Leonard?”

“Yes?”

She didn’t know why she said it.

But she said it anyway.

“Be careful with your lifestyle,” she said softly. “Fast cars… parties… people can get hurt.”

Leonard smirked faintly.

“Are you worried about me?” he asked.

Aurora quickly looked away.

“Just… as a person,” she said quietly.

Leonard didn’t reply immediately.

But he watched her get on the bus.

And for the first time in a long time —

He didn’t feel like rushing to his next party or race.

He just stood there.

Thinking about a quiet girl who wanted peace more than danger.
