CHAPTER TWO
A Temper You Don’t Test
Aurora had learned something about Leonard without ever speaking to him.
When he walked into a room, the air changed.
It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t dramatic.
It was control.
The hallway that had been noisy seconds before would grow quiet. Laughter would replace whisper. Eyes would follow him — some in fear, some in admiration, most in caution.
The Iron Wolves moved behind him like shadows. Five boys. All different. All dangerous in their own way.
But Leonard?
He didn’t walk like someone trying to impress people.
He walked like someone who didn’t need to.
Aurora kept her head down as she arranged her books inside her locker. She could feel it — that shift in the atmosphere.
They were here.
She didn’t look.
She never looked.
Because everyone knew one thing:
The Iron Wolves were not guys you tested. And Leonard was not someone you challenged.
A sudden crash echoed through the hallway.
Gasps followed.
Aurora flinched.
A boy from the junior class had bumped into one of Leonard’s friends, causing a drink to spill across a black leather jacket.
The junior froze.
“I—I’m sorry,” he stammered.
Silence.
Leonard stepped forward slowly.
Aurora didn’t mean to look.
But she did.
His jaw was tight. His eyes darker than usual. The playful, careless party-boy mask was gone.
“What did you just do?” Leonard asked quietly.
That was the scary part.
He wasn’t shouting.
The junior swallowed. “It was an accident—”
Before he could finish, Leonard grabbed the front of his shirt and pushed him back against the lockers. The metal doors slammed loudly.
Gasps spread.
Aurora’s heart pounded so hard she thought people could hear it.
“You don’t walk without watching where you’re going,” Leonard said, his voice low and sharp. “Especially when I’m standing there.”
His bad temper wasn’t loud chaos.
It was controlled danger.
One of the Wolves stepped forward. “Leo, leave him. He’s shaking already.”
Leonard stared at the junior for a long second.
Then he released him.
The boy slid down slightly, breathless, terrified.
“Next time,” Leonard said calmly, adjusting his jacket, “it won’t be just a warning.”
And just like that, he walked away.
The Wolves followed.
The hallway slowly came back to life.
Aurora stood frozen.
She should have looked away.
She should have ignored him like she always did.
But as Leonard walked past her locker, something unexpected happened.
He paused.
Just for a second.
His eyes shifted.
And they landed on her.
Aurora’s breath caught.
It wasn’t anger in his gaze.
It wasn’t even his usual cold expression.
It was… curiosity.
Like he was trying to figure her out.
Her fingers tightened around her sketchbook.
Then he walked away.
But something told her one thing very clearly:
Leonard Sterling had noticed her.
And that was either the beginning of something dangerous…
Or the beginning of something she would never be able to escape.
