Synopsis

"Why don't you tell your children what you were doing when you travelled to Bayelsa for business" Nma shouted as she dropped the kitchen knife and wiped her hands on her wrapper "Tell them how you squandered all the family's money on women and drinks" She continued, "Or you don't want to tell them? Then let me tell them" She turned to her children, three sat at the dining table and the first stood before her. But before she could continue she glanced at her last born and paused, she couldn't bring herself to continue because of the tears streaming down her child's eyes. Chidera was her last born and only girl but she rarely cried, she was always so happy, some said she carried the joy of the whole family. But for the first time in a long while she was in tears. This was not how she hoped her children found out, she hoped they never found out. She wanted to bear the pain of her broken marriage by herself and give her children the illusion of a perfect family, but they are grown now. Chidera was eighteen years old now, they weren't babies anymore. Nma paused to think about her life, when did it all go wrong? She was in her twenty-fourth year of marriage, marriage she entered purely for her survival but it turned out to be after her survival. She thought about her husband's family, She thought about her own family, She thought about her children, She thought about her church, She was always thinking about one person or the other. But for the first time since she was born, she paused to think about herself. Then she realized that she has never thought about just herself before and that was going to change now.
