Chapter 8: Future Sold

Truth rarely arrives with mercy.

Gabriel placed the Family Ledger on his father’s desk before the silence became unbearable. Manni stared at the worn leather cover without touching it. His shoulders sagged, but he said nothing. You knew this was coming, Gabriel said. Stop hiding behind excuses, tell us why the sea knows our names. Selene wheeled herself into the study, Mama Yatta followed, confused and frightened. Jonah quietly closed the door behind them. Manni looked from one child to another. His eyes settled on the ring wrapped around his finger.

“I prayed you would never find that book,” he whispered. Gabriel pushed the Ledger forward, then explain it, with trembling hands, Manni opened the first page. The ink had faded, yet every sentence remained painfully clear.

“Year One: The sea kept its promise.” He turned another page. “Year Seven: Gabriel spoke his first word. I almost confessed.” Another page. “Year Fifteen: Selene graduated first in her class. I could not celebrate.” Tears blurred Manni’s vision.

I wrote those words because I couldn’t bear the weight, he said. Gabriel folded his arms, then stop protecting the lie, he yelled. For a long moment, only the ticking clock disturbed the room. Outside, distant waves rolled against the shore, their rhythm reaching the open window like an unwelcome memory. Mama Yatta looked between her husband and the Ledger. 

Emmanuel,she said softly, what have you hidden from us? Manni closed his eyes. His breathing grew uneven. He reached for the ring again, twisting it with trembling fingers, but it refused to move. I wanted to give you everything, he whispered. You gave us fear, Selene cried. Those words cut deeper than anger as Manni slowly walked to the study door, without speaking, he turned the key and the lock clicked. He faced his family, as tears ran freely down his face. Then, with a broken voice, he said, before I became a billionaire… I went looking for the sea.
