Chapter 11: The Last Price

Some decisions cannot be delayed because time has already chosen for you.

Chief Emmanuel Nimley returned to Monrovia with the weight of the oracle’s words pressing against his chest. The city moved as it always had, traffic flowed, street vendors called to customers, and office towers reflected the afternoon sun but none of it reached him. For the first time in decades, he felt poorer than the young man who had once walked into the mangroves with empty hands.

At Nimley Holdings Headquarters, the boardroom was tense. Samuel Cooper stood beside the long conference table, surrounded by anxious directors and legal advisers. News of Gabriel’s collapse and Selene’s unexplained illness had frightened investors. Shares were falling, and rumors spread faster than facts. “We need a public statement,” Samuel said. “Silence is costing us.” Emmanuel nodded absently, “I’ll address the Masses.”

Relief swept across the room. They assumed he meant another reassuring speech, another generous donation, another promise that everything remained under control, only Emmanuel knew otherwise. That evening, Ellen Brooks entered his office carrying a thin folder. “I found something unusual, ownership records from twenty-eight years ago are missing. It’s as if the company’s earliest files were deliberately erased.” Emmanuel closed the folder without reading further, they’re gone because I wanted them gone. Ellen searched his face, sensing an answer she wasn’t ready to hear.

After she left, Richard Mensah appeared on the evening news, questioning whether the Nations most admired businessman was hiding a corporate scandal. Emmanuel switched off the television. He opened the Family Ledger one final time and wrote a single sentence beneath the last entry.

Tomorrow, the debt will no longer belong to my children.

He signed his name, closed the book, and slipped it into his coat. Outside, thunder rolled across the Atlantic beneath a cloudless sky. His phone buzzed, the notification came from the National Broadcasting Network. His press conference had been confirmed live from the Monrovia Sea Wall at noon.
