Some stories refuse to die because the sea keeps telling them.
Gabriel barely slept after leaving his father’s study. The journal, the faded map, and the fear on Manni’s face circled his thoughts until dawn. He needed answers, and he knew there was only one person who might have them, Jonah.
By midmorning, Gabriel drove to the West Point fishing docks. The scent of salt, smoke, and fresh fish filled the air. Wooden boats rocked gently against the tide as fishermen repaired torn nets beneath the rising sun. Jonah looked up from a half-finished canoe and smiled. “Ma mehn”, you only come here when something is wrong.”
Gabriel held out the folded map, what do you know about this place? Jonah wiped his hands on a cloth before studying the red mark.
“The old mangroves,” he said quietly. “Most people stay away.” Why? Because the elders say some bargains never end, Gabriel frowned. “I don’t believe in curses.”
“You don’t have to,” Jonah replied. “Some people still believe in you.” An old fisherman sitting nearby overheard them, burn that map, he muttered. Neither brother answered.
“When I was a boy, Chief Toe Karbor warned us never to seek wealth from the sea. He said the ocean gives freely to honest fishermen, but it demands a terrible price from those who try to own what was never theirs.” Gabriel felt a chill.
“Did he ever mention a woman?” The fisherman nodded once. An old keeper who lived where the mangroves swallowed the tide. Old Mother Nyanbo? The man’s eyes widened. He stepped back as though Gabriel had spoken a forbidden name, without another word, he climbed into his canoe and pushed away from the dock. Jonah watched him disappear before turning back to his brother.
“I was hoping you’d never hear that name.” Gabriel unfolded the map again. Scrawled across the bottom, in faded ink he hadn’t noticed before, were five chilling words “She is waiting for you.”
