The Atlantic never forgot a promise, even when the man who made it believed gold had buried it forever.
The Atlantic Crown Hotel glittered above Monrovia, its glass walls reflecting the last rays of sunset across the restless sea. Inside, Liberia’s elite gathered beneath crystal chandeliers to celebrate one man, Chief Emmanuel “Manni” Nimley. He is a billionaire, a philanthropist and a national hero.
Applause thundered as Manni strode onto the stage in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo. Cameras flashed from every direction while a massive screen displayed the schools, hospitals, and scholarships funded by the Nimley Foundation. On his right hand rested an antique gold ring that shimmered strangely beneath the lights.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the host announced, please congratulate Liberia’s Philanthropist of the Year!” While he was still at it, the ballroom erupted, Manni accepted the crystal award with a polished smile, and then beckoned toward the front row. “It is time, for the next generation.”
A portrait of Gabriel Nimley filled the screen as the incoming executive chairman. Gabriel rose to another standing ovation. Calm and composed, the Oxford-educated economist adjusted his jacket and climbed the stage while his mother smiled proudly and gave him an encouraging nod. He reached for the microphone, just then a low roar echoed inside his ears like crashing waves. Gabriel frowned, where was the sound of the water coming. “Hmmm, where is the sound of this water coming from?”
The ballroom went silent after a moment, then there was applause, yet the sound grew louder, swallowing every voice. He could literally hear it. Crash…crash…crash. His vision blurred and for an instant, the polished stage looked drenched in seawater. Then a whisper drifted through the roaring tide. “The sea remembers.”
Gabriel’s hand trembled. The microphone slipped from his fingers and hit the floor and just when the applause died instantly. He stared toward the dark Atlantic beyond the glass windows and his face drained of color. Then, in a voice that barely sounded like his own, he whispered, “Father… what did you do?”
