Synopsis

An African-Korean college student, Chisom Grace Hwang reluctantly volunteered to be part of an international programme that was to hold in Nigeria, the homeland of a father she barely remembered. Since he disappeared from her life when she was seven, and legally declared dead years after, Grace had no strong foundational knowledge about her African cultural heritage, just living the simple Busan girl life, an elite student of Yonsei University. And when she made the decision to board the plane to Lagos with her luggage packed and ready, she thought all life had to offer was Kimchi and Bibimbap. Welcome to the 3rd Annual Global Heritage Story Project. For the first two weeks of the summer programme, she cried home, longing for the comfort of her sofa in Haeundae, too homesick to appreciate the tropical climate, and vibrant culture that Nigeria offered. But then things changed. what turned to be an activity to build her resumé and perhaps network turned into something life changing. From Lagos to Enugu, and then in the bustling streets of Onitsha, Grace came to realize that when Kimchi met Jollof, she finally found the missing half of herself. She got to learn about her culture, taste dishes that satisfied her buds, attempt to speak her dialect as fluent as she could, connect with her cousins, and relatives. And then she found an answer to a question, she had long forgotten she asked. The very question, that kept her up at night, and of course, no one answered And there she was standing at the greatest turning point of her life, facing a choice she never imagined she would make, continue living the comfortable life she had always known, or follow what could finally lead her to the father the world believed was dead.
