The office door burst open.
Michael immediately stood in front of Mercy and Adaeze.
Three men dressed in black rushed inside.
One of them pointed toward the flash drive.
"Give it to us."
Mercy held it tightly.
"I've protected this for eighteen years."
"I'm not handing it over."
The tallest man stepped forward.
"You don't have a choice."
Before he could reach her...
The hospital's backup generator roared to life.
The lights flickered back on.
At that same moment, security guards and hospital staff rushed down the corridor after hearing the commotion.
The intruders realized they had lost the advantage.
"Let's go!"
They turned and fled through the back exit.
Everyone remained silent for several moments.
Mercy finally placed the flash drive on the table.
"I've been running from this day for almost two decades."
She inserted it into an old computer in her office.
A video appeared on the screen.
It showed Grace speaking directly to the camera.
She looked frightened—but determined.
"If you're watching this... it means the truth has finally found its way out."
"My name is Grace Okafor."
"I didn't abandon Daniel."
"I loved him with all my heart."
"A few weeks before graduation, I accidentally witnessed members of a criminal syndicate using abandoned university buildings to store illegal weapons and forged documents."
"When they realized I had seen them, they threatened to kill Daniel and my family if I reported them."
"Professor Adebayo and Mercy tried to help me, but there was only one way to keep everyone alive."
"I disappeared."
Tears rolled down Mercy's cheeks.
"So she sacrificed everything..." Adaeze whispered.
The video continued.
"If Daniel is still alive..."
"Please tell him I never stopped loving him."
"Every birthday... every Christmas... every single day... I prayed that he would find happiness, even if it wasn't with me."
"I'm sorry."
The recording ended.
Silence filled the room.
Mercy opened the sealed envelope marked "For Daniel Only."
She handed it to Michael.
"I think it's time."
Michael unfolded the letter and read it aloud.
"Dear Daniel,
If this letter reaches you, it means the danger is finally over.
Please don't spend your life searching for me. Live. Laugh. Love again if you must.
You gave me the happiest memories of my life, and that is enough for me.
Wherever I am, a part of my heart will always belong to you.
Forever yours, Grace."
Adaeze quietly wiped away a tear.
Weeks later...
The police, using the evidence on the flash drive, reopened the old case.
Several members of the criminal syndicate were arrested.
Professor Adebayo was rescued from an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Port Harcourt.
Though weak, he was alive.
When Michael visited him in the hospital, the old professor smiled.
"You didn't give up."
Michael shook his head.
"Grace deserved the truth."
Months passed.
The university organized a memorial lecture in Grace Okafor's honour.
Her courage and sacrifice, hidden for so many years, finally became known.
After the ceremony, Adaeze and Michael returned to the library where everything had begun.
The same shelf.
The same old wooden table.
Adaeze smiled.
"Funny how one forgotten letter changed everything."
Michael laughed softly.
"It wasn't forgotten."
"It was simply waiting for the right people to find it."
He reached for her hand.
This time, Adaeze didn't pull away.
She smiled and held it gently.
Outside, the evening sun bathed the campus in golden light.
Some stories end with answers.
Others begin because someone was brave enough to ask questions.
Their story...
...was only just beginning.
THE END
