The university library was unusually quiet.
Only the soft hum of the ceiling fans and the occasional turning of pages broke the silence.
Adaeze sighed as she rubbed her tired eyes. Final-year project deadlines were only weeks away, and sleep had become a luxury she could no longer afford.
She walked through the dusty shelves searching for a book on research methodology.
After several minutes, she found one hidden between two thick textbooks.
"It looks like nobody has touched this in years," she murmured.
She dusted the cover and carried it to a nearby table.
As she opened the first few pages...
A folded brown envelope slipped out.
It landed softly on the floor.
She frowned.
"What is this?"
The envelope looked old.
Very old.
Its edges had turned yellow, and the handwriting on the front had faded with time.
It simply read...
"For Daniel."
Adaeze looked around the library.
No one seemed to notice.
Curiosity won.
She slowly unfolded the letter.
Dear Daniel,
If you're reading this, then fate has finally been kind to us.
I'm sorry I disappeared without saying goodbye.
It wasn't because I stopped loving you.
Life forced me to make a decision I never wanted to make.
Every day I pray you'll forgive me.
If we never meet again...
Please remember that you were the best thing that ever happened to me.
Forever yours,
Grace.
Adaeze read the letter again.
Then again.
Her heart tightened.
Who was Grace?
Who was Daniel?
Why was the letter hidden inside a library book?
And why had nobody claimed it?
Just then...
A deep voice behind her spoke.
"That's not yours."
Adaeze jumped in shock.
The letter slipped from her fingers.
Standing behind her was a tall young man dressed in a black hoodie, carrying a stack of books.
His eyes remained fixed on the letter.
"I've been looking for that," he said quietly.
Adaeze frowned.
"You know this letter?"
The young man hesitated.
Then he smiled faintly.
"No..."
"But I know exactly who wrote it."
The room suddenly felt colder.
