The message sat on my screen.
Simple.
Short.
Deadly.
"Ask Daniel what really happened the night you left."
I couldn't stop staring at it.
My heart was beating so hard it felt painful.
Because suddenly...
This wasn't about me anymore.
It wasn't just about the man from my past.
It was about Daniel too.
And judging from the look on his face...
He knew exactly what the message meant.
"Amara."
His voice was quiet.
Careful.
Too careful.
I looked up slowly.
The color had drained from his face.
His jaw was tight.
His eyes filled with something I hadn't seen before.
Regret.
And suddenly...
I wasn't sure I wanted answers anymore.
Because answers change things.
Sometimes permanently.
"What happened?"
My voice barely came out.
Daniel looked away.
That hurt.
More than it should have.
Because until now...
He had always looked directly at me.
Always.
But not this time.
"What happened that night?"
The question hung between us.
Heavy.
Painful.
Unavoidable.
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
As though he had spent days preparing for this moment.
Maybe weeks.
Maybe longer.
Then he sighed.
And when he opened his eyes again...
Something had changed.
The walls were gone.
The distance.
The carefulness.
The mystery.
Gone.
Leaving only the truth.
"I knew about you before we met."
The words hit me like ice water.
"What?"
"I knew who you were."
My chest tightened instantly.
"No."
"Amara—"
"No."
I stepped backward.
Because suddenly nothing made sense.
The café.
The conversations.
The way he noticed everything.
The way he seemed to understand me.
It wasn't random.
It wasn't fate.
It wasn't coincidence.
And that realization hurt far more than I expected.
"You knew?"
My voice cracked.
"From the beginning?"
Daniel swallowed.
Then nodded once.
Slowly.
Painfully.
And somehow...
That was worse than hearing the words.
I laughed.
A broken sound.
Because what else was I supposed to do?
"Wow."
The word barely sounded like me.
"Just..."
I shook my head.
"Wow."
Daniel took a step toward me.
I immediately stepped back.
Again.
The hurt that flashed across his face was instant.
Real.
But I couldn't think about that right now.
I couldn't think about anything except—
"You lied."
His eyes closed briefly.
"I know."
"You sat there."
My voice rose.
"You listened to me."
I pointed at him.
"You watched me trust you."
"Amara—"
"You let me trust you."
Silence.
The worst kind.
Because he wasn't denying it.
He couldn't.
It was true.
The tears gathering in my eyes made me angry.
I hated crying.
Especially when someone could see.
Especially him.
"I didn't plan this."
Daniel's voice sounded rough now.
More emotional than I'd ever heard it.
"I swear I didn't."
I laughed again.
"Which part?"
He froze.
"The part where you knew who I was?"
Silence.
"The part where you knew him?"
More silence.
"The part where you let me believe meeting you was an accident?"
Daniel looked like every word physically hurt.
Good.
Maybe that was cruel.
But I wanted him to hurt.
Just a little.
Because I was hurting too.
The street suddenly felt colder.
Lonelier.
Like the ground beneath me wasn't stable anymore.
"I was supposed to stay away."
The words slipped from Daniel before he could stop them.
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Immediately...
His expression changed.
Like he regretted saying it.
Too late.
"Stay away from me?"
He didn't answer.
Which was answer enough.
I felt sick.
Actually sick.
The city lights blurred for a second.
The tears I had been fighting finally escaped.
One.
Then another.
Daniel saw them.
And looked absolutely devastated.
"Don't."
His voice cracked slightly.
"Please don't cry."
That made me laugh through the tears.
A sad laugh.
The kind that hurts.
"You don't get to say that."
His eyes shut briefly.
Because he knew I was right.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
The sincerity in his voice almost broke me.
Because I believed him.
And somehow...
That made it worse.
Before either of us could say another word—
My phone rang.
Both of us froze.
I didn't even need to look.
I knew who it was.
Him.
The man from my past.
The man connected to all of this.
The man who apparently knew things I didn't.
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Daniel stared at it.
Then at me.
And for the first time...
There was fear in his eyes.
Real fear.
"Don't answer."
The words came out immediately.
Urgent.
Desperate.
My head snapped up.
"What?"
His jaw tightened.
"Please."
My heartbeat quickened.
Because Daniel had never sounded afraid before.
Never.
And suddenly...
I wanted to know why.
The phone continued ringing.
Waiting.
Demanding.
And for the first time...
I wasn't sure which man I should be afraid of.
The one calling me.
Or the one standing in front of me.
