The phone kept ringing.
Daniel's eyes never left mine.
"Please don't answer."
The fear in his voice shocked me.
Not because he sounded afraid for himself.
Because he sounded afraid for me.
Slowly, I lowered the phone.
The call ended.
Silence.
Then I looked directly at him.
"No more secrets."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then nodded.
"He was my best friend."
My chest tightened.
"He and I grew up together."
The words came slowly.
Carefully.
Painfully.
"The night you left him..."
He swallowed.
"...he wasn't the only one who got hurt."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked away.
Then back at me.
"He wasn't angry because you left."
I froze.
"What?"
"He was angry because he knew why you left."
The world seemed to stop.
Because suddenly...
Everything I believed began falling apart.
