Amara had rules.
Clear, simple, unbreakable rules.
No distractions.
No emotional attachments.
No dependence.
Daniel was quietly breaking every single one of them.
She started noticing things she never used to.
The way she looked for him when she entered a room.
The way her mood shifted depending on his presence.
The way she smiled—actually smiled—when he said something ridiculous.
It scared her.
Because this wasn’t part of her plan.
One evening, they walked side by side in comfortable silence, the sky painted in soft shades of orange and purple.
“Why do you keep people at a distance?” Daniel asked suddenly.
Amara stiffened. “I don’t.”
“You do,” he said gently. “Even with me.”
She stopped walking.
“That’s because I don’t want to depend on anyone,” she said, her voice steady but guarded.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Or because you’re afraid you already do?”
The words hit deeper than she expected.
Amara looked away, her chest tightening.
She didn’t like this feeling—the uncertainty, the vulnerability.
“I should go,” she said quickly.
But as she walked away, she knew something had changed.
The walls she built so carefully…
Were no longer as strong as they used to be.
