Adrian kissed my forehead before he left, and for the first time in days, a trembling hope settled in my chest. But dawn crept in too quickly, and with it came the cold reminder that I didn’t belong here- I had to go back to my world. Back to reality. Back to danger.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway, sharp and purposeful. My heart jumped.
Dr. Kingston and Zayn.
Why were they here this early?
“Hey, Tori,” Zayn said, his tone far too casual for the hour.
He didn’t wait for a response. “Just had a meeting with the board of directors. I got approved. And guess what? The lawyer Dad gave his will to was killed- so I’m the only heir to Temple’s Corporation.”
My stomach twisted.
“Don’t forget about me,” Dr. Kingston cut in gruffly.
“Oh yes,” Zayn said with a smirk, “Mr. Kingston is now the CEO of the hospital.”
“Doctor,” Kingston corrected sharply.
“Whatever.”
Zayn turned back to me, his eyes cold and gleaming. “So, Tori… you’re no longer needed.”
His hand brushed my face- gentle, mocking. “You’re the sleeping beauty whose prince charming never came.”
Then he stepped back.
“Kill her,” he ordered, and walked out without a second glance.
Dr. Kingston moved closer. He opened his bag, pulled out a syringe, and inserted something into the drip bag.
“You’ll feel a lot of pain,” he said, almost kindly. “But you’ll be fine.”
He covered my face with a white blanket as if I were already dead. Then he placed lilies beside me- funeral flowers.
He left.
“No!” I screamed. “Adrian0- help me!”
The drip turned black, the liquid swirling like something alive. Panic clawed at my chest. Whatever he injected would kill me soon.
I staggered around the glass tube and slammed my fists against it.
“I can’t die like this!” I cried. “Mom… Dad… I can’t die this way!”
The first burn of the poison ripped through me- fire coursing through my veins. I screamed, pounding the glass with everything I had.
“Let me out!” My voice cracked. “Adrian! Please- I need you!”
But he wasn’t here.
The truth hit me like ice- I was slipping. My consciousness sinking somewhere deep, far from the real world. In reality, I was already in a drug-induced slumber, trapped.
“What can I do?” My voice was barely a whisper.
I kept banging, kept fighting, even as my strength faded. My knees buckled, and I sank to the floor, shaking violently.
“No… no, no- this can’t happen,” I sobbed, curling in on myself.
“Someone… anyone… help me.”
