Amara stared at Victor's message until the words began to blur.

Daniel recommended you to me.

Why would Daniel do that?

The same Daniel who had laughed at her dreams. The same man who had walked away because she had nothing to offer him. Now he was discussing her with a stranger?

She picked up her phone and typed a reply.

What exactly did Daniel tell you about me?

Victor responded a few minutes later.

He told me you're hardworking and trying to build a business. He said you might be interested in an opportunity that could help you grow.

Amara frowned.

That didn't sound like the Daniel she knew.

Or perhaps she had never truly known him.

She wanted to ask more questions, but she decided to speak to Mama Grace first. She forwarded the conversation to her and waited for her response.

Mama Grace called almost immediately.

"Amara, don't let your curiosity push you into anything. We still need to verify Victor's business."

"I know, ma. But why would Daniel recommend me?"

"That is a question you can ask Daniel directly. Just don't confuse an explanation with proof that someone has changed."

Amara thanked her and ended the call.

For several minutes, she considered ignoring the message altogether. She had worked too hard to allow Daniel's presence to disturb her peace again.

But she needed to understand what was happening.

She called him.

Daniel answered on the second ring.

"Amara?"

"Daniel, I want to ask you something."

"Go ahead."

"Do you know someone called Victor?"

There was a pause.

"Yes. Why?"

"He contacted me about a business opportunity. He said you recommended me to him."

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"I was going to tell you."

"When? After I had already agreed to give him money?"

"No, Amara. That's not what I meant."

"Then explain."

Daniel was silent for a moment.

"I met Victor through someone I know. When I told him about you and the business you're trying to build with Mama Grace, he said he might be able to help. I gave him your business page so he could contact you."

Amara felt anger rising inside her.

"You gave a stranger my details without asking me?"

"Your business page is public. I didn't give him your private information."

"That doesn't mean you should make decisions on my behalf, Daniel."

"I'm sorry. I thought I was helping."

She closed her eyes briefly.

There was a time when she would have accepted that explanation immediately. She would have been grateful that Daniel was paying attention to her life again.

But she was learning to ask questions instead of accepting everything simply because she wanted to believe someone.

"Why are you suddenly interested in helping me?" she asked.

Daniel hesitated.

"Because I know I treated you badly. When I saw you working hard and trying to build something for yourself, I realised how wrong I had been."

Amara swallowed.

"And if I had remained where I was? If I hadn't found Mama Grace or started selling online, would you still be trying to help me?"

Daniel said nothing.

His silence hurt more than she expected.

Finally, he spoke.

"I don't know, Amara. Maybe I wouldn't have understood things the way I do now."

At least he had answered honestly.

But honesty did not erase the past.

"Thank you for explaining," she said. "I'll decide for myself whether to work with Victor. Please don't arrange anything else on my behalf."

"I understand."

They ended the call.

Amara placed her phone on the table and sat quietly.

She had hoped Daniel's actions meant he was finally becoming the man she once wanted him to be. Instead, she was reminded that change was complicated. People could regret their mistakes and still struggle to respect boundaries.

The next morning, she went to Mama Grace's shop determined to focus on work.

However, before she could begin arranging the products, Victor called.

"Good morning, Amara. I hope you've had time to think about our offer."

"I have, but we haven't finished verifying everything."

"That's understandable. I just wanted you to know that I believe you have potential. I wouldn't have contacted you if I didn't think there was a chance for us to do something worthwhile."

Amara appreciated the compliment, but she remained cautious.

"Thank you. We'll let you know when we've completed our enquiries."

After the call, Mama Grace looked at her.

"What did he say?"

"He wants an answer, but I told him we need more time."

"Good. A sound decision should survive a few questions."

They returned to work.

Later that afternoon, Mama Grace received a call from one of her contacts who had been helping her check Victor's business.

After listening for several minutes, she thanked the caller and ended the call.

Amara immediately noticed the change in her expression.

"Ma, what did they say?"

Mama Grace pulled a chair closer.

"They couldn't confirm all the information Victor gave us. That doesn't automatically mean he's dishonest, but it means we should not send him any money until we have reliable proof."

Amara felt a mixture of disappointment and relief.

"So we're not going ahead?"

"Not yet. We can continue checking, but we will not risk the money we have worked hard to earn."

Amara nodded.

She had wanted the opportunity to be real. She had imagined how much faster the business might grow if they found a good supplier.

Still, she was grateful that Mama Grace had taught her to slow down before making a costly mistake.

That evening, Daniel sent her another message.

I know you may not want to hear from me, but I want you to know that I'm genuinely sorry for how I treated you.

Amara read it without replying immediately.

Then another message arrived.

I don't expect you to forgive me today. I only hope that one day you'll believe I can become a better person.

She put the phone down.

She wasn't ready to forgive him completely, and she wasn't ready to return to their relationship.

For now, she needed to understand herself, protect her peace, and continue building her future.

The following morning, something wonderful happened.

A customer who had purchased products through their online page returned with two new orders. She had recommended Mama Grace's shop to her friends because she was pleased with the service.

Mama Grace was delighted.

"Do you see what good service can do?" she asked Amara. "One satisfied customer can introduce you to many more."

Amara smiled.

Their progress was small, but it was real. Unlike Victor's promises, this was something they could see and measure.

As the day ended, Mama Grace handed Amara a small envelope.

Amara looked at it in surprise.

"What's this, ma?"

"Your pay for the week, together with a little extra for the work you've done helping with the online orders."

Amara opened the envelope and stared at the money.

It wasn't a fortune, but she had earned it honestly.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Thank you, ma."

"You earned it, my daughter. Never forget that."

On her way home, Amara stopped at a small shop and bought herself a simple notebook with part of her earnings. She planned to use it to record her savings, expenses, and business ideas.

That night, she wrote her first entry:

I may not have much today, but I am learning how to build something that belongs to me.

She closed the notebook and smiled.

She was beginning to understand that success was not always about finding one big opportunity. Sometimes it was about recognising the small ones, protecting what you had, and refusing to give up.

Then her phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

Amara answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice came through.

"Good evening. Am I speaking with Amara?"

"Yes. Who is this?"

"My name is Sandra. I believe you know Daniel."

Amara sat up straight.

"Yes. Why?"

There was a brief pause.

"I think you need to know something about him before you decide whether to give him another chance."

Amara's heart began to pound.

"What are you talking about?"

Sandra lowered her voice.

"Daniel hasn't told you the whole truth about why he came back into your life."

The call suddenly went silent.

Amara stared at her phone, unable to speak.

What had Daniel hidden from her?

And who was Sandra?

To be continued…
